The typewriter with a barrel shaped type carrier head which is operated with a rotary and tilting action has a drive system which includes a toothed drive belt for the rotary movement. This is combined with a linkage arrangement which includes a set of telescopic sliders parallel to the belt. These operate two sloping links forming the input to a different drive. They have a connecting link between them carrying an arm forming the output of the drive. This swings either to one side of the other so as to operate with a hooked lever forming part of the linkage directly operated by the type keys. The connecting link is supported so that it can swing about its central pivot and slide on a slotted lever parallel to the telescopic sliders.
