The cooling pond, used for nuclear or other plant, in which the body or warm water is cooled down using water sprays, has the sprays directed towards a ring shaped region leaving the central region unsprayed. The width of the central region is three times the width of the peripheral region. A smaller outer region is also free from sprays, so that the banks are not wetted. The height of the sprays is 1-10m and the width of the outer region is 1-3 times the spray height. In an alternative system the sprays are directed at an angle to the surface.
