Animal protein hydrolysates useful for animal feedstuffs - are obtd. by protease and amylase hydrolysis of blood etc.

Proteinaceous material of animal origin is subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis with protease(s) and/or amylase(s) having proteolytic activity. After the hydrolysis unused enzyme is inactivated. Pref. >=1 protease and >=1 amylase is used, with hydrolysis at a pH value at which the amylase displays its activity, esp. at pH 2-7. With an alkaline protease such as subtilisin hydrolysis is pref. at pH 8-13. Urea is pref. added before the hydrolysis, esp. 0.01-1 mole/1. hydrolysis mixt. Usually 0.1-5% enzyme is used, based on the total mixt. After the hydrolysis the enzyme(s) may be inactivated by heating. Hydrolysates of consistent uniformity and high quality are obtd. in high yields esp. from blood, carcass waste, bone waste, meat waste etc. obtd. during the slaughter and subsequent processing of animals. The hydrolysates are useful as nutritive animal feedstuffs and food compsns.
