The parts are esp. those requiring high dimensional accuracy and high wear resistance and, when they become worn, they are subjected to a diffusion treatment, e.g. nitriding, borom diffusion, carburising, or carbonitriding, in solid, liq. or gaseous media., so atoms diffuse into the parts and form cpds. with the substrate. The diffusion process results in the growth of the parts, and is controlled so that the parts are restored to their original dimensions. Used, e.g. for rebuilding pistons and cylinders of diesel fuel injection pumps.
