The mechanism is intended for sorting and stacking sheets into a number of trays (2). It comprises pairs of sheet transfer rollers (10, 11) which move the sheets from an entry (4) and towards the trays, and an additional element (6, 13) which is arranged in the transfer path and can swivel upwards so that the upper rollers are lifted and the space in the path increased. A device is provided to release the element when an irregularity occurs in the sheet transport so that the path is opened to store the sheets entering until the sheet transport is operational again.
