Application on substrates of a self-lubricating layer of metal chalcogenide, with the cathode spraying process, by using as target chalcogenides comprising an excess of one of the elements in a free state, composing such chalcogenides. According to this process, the cathodic space of said target is submitted to a magnetic field and the current spraying density is selected so that the deposit rate is at least 0.1 m/min. The coating layer obtained is of the turbostratic type.
