Polyphosphazene polymers containing ortho-difunctional phenylene substituents and method for preparing same.

Polyphosphazene polymers are prepared which contain repeating units represented by the formula:
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="30" wi="33" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>wherein X and Y are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of:
<Chemistry id="chema02" num="0002"><Image id="ia02" he="4" wi="41" file="IMGA0002.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>and R is selected from the group consisting of halogen, cyano, nitro, alkoxy and alkyl radicals containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms: n' = 0 to 4: and 20 < w ≤ 50,000 per polymer. The polymers of the invention can contain a mixture of different ortho-difunctional phenylene substituents.

The polymers of the invention can be utilized to form protective films and can also be utilized in applications such as for molding, coatings, foams, fibers and the like.
