An exhaust-gas catalyst system includes a substrate, carrying a wash coat of alpha phase alumina, and a catalyst containing rhodium deposited thereon. By using alpha phase alumina as the wash coat, the rhodium does not dissolve into the wash coat during periods when the catalyst system is subjected to high temperature oxidizing conditions.
