To separate suspended solid particles, a liquid stream is divided in inclined flow channels (8) which are provided with upper and lower sieve surfaces (14) which are movable relative to each other. The flow velocity in the flow channels (8) is chosen so that the flow is turbulent and is so low that a sedimentation of suspended material takes place to form a clear layer at the top part of the liquid stream. More than half of the liquid fed to the flow channels (8) is filtered off through the upper sieve surface and the rest through the sediment collected on the bottom sieve surface. Finally, the sediment is removed from the bottom sieve surface by a scraper (23). The method is particularly suitable for waste water purification. The apparatus for carrying out the method has a relatively high throughput, so that the separation can be achieved with a low residence time. <IMAGE> |
