PURPOSE:To produce optical fiber with an easily controllavle refractive index by adding water, a specified common solvent and an acidic substance to liquid raw material for a glass compsn. and by irradiating the mixed raw material with microwaves to form an adequate amt. of glass soot in a short time after which the soot is heated, melted, and drawn. CONSTITUTION:An alkylated silicon cpd. is dispersed or dissolved in water to prepare liquid raw material 2 for a glass compsn. for optical fiber. To raw material 2 are added water, a common solvent compatible with water and material 2, and an acidic substance such as phosphoric acid or oxalic acid. The mixed raw material is stored in hopper 1. The inside of microwave oven 3 is irradiated with microwaves from microwave power source 4 through waveguide 5 and antenna 6, and O2 gas is introduced from arraow 8. At this state, raw material 2 is dropped from nozzle 11 of hopper 1 to form glass soot 10 in crucible 7, and soot 10 is heated, melted, and drawn to obtain optical fiber. |
