<p>A crushing and/or shredding machine, especially for refuse of various kinds, has a rotor turning about a horizontal axis, the refuse to be crushed being fed to the upper quadrant on the ascending side of the said rotor. At its periphery the rotor has beater elements co-operating with an impact member located adjacent the said rotor and remote from the refuse inlet in the upper part of the housing. A crusher track is located pivotably adjacent the rotor below the impact member, and a crushing grate, following the crusher track in the direction of rotation extends below and around the rotor as far as the refuse inlet and approximately to the height of the rotor shaft. The crusher track is pivotable within the housing, away from the rotor into an inoperative position. An aperture, through which the crushing grate may be withdrawn from the housing to an inoperative position, is adapted to be closed when the crushing grate is so displaced. The direction of rotation of the rotor can be reversed, the machine including a ripping comb, adjacent the inlet which can be advanced to co-operate with the beater elements of the rotor in this mode of operation which is useful for shredding tires.</p> |
