In a hydraulic turbine plant steam from a generator 30 passes via a valve C and pipe 33 to a first container 23 causing liquid, e.g. water, in the latter to be forced through pipe 24, valve A, hollow shaft 17, and the interior of rotor 13 to issue through tangential nozzles 14 and drive the rotor, The latter is enclosed within a casing 35 having inclined baffles 11 on its interior surface which direct the liquid thrown out from nozzles 14 towards a drain hole 12 in the bottom of the casing. The liquid passing through hole 12 flows under gravity via valve B and pipes 27, 37 to second and third containers 26, 36 respectively. When all the liquid has been forced out of container 23 valve A, B and C are simultaneously operated so that steam pressure is directed via pipe 41 to container 26 so as to force liquid through pipe 39 to drive the rotor 13 whilst the drain liquid is directed through pipes 38, 37 to containers 23, 36 respectively. When container 36 is empty the valves are again operated so that liquid under steam pressure is forced from container 36. Thus a continuous supply of liquid to drive rotor 13 is maintained. Power is taken-off from the rotor via gearing 20, 21 and shaft 22. |
