Compounds of formula R1 being an ester-forming -COOR4, -OR5 or -OCOR6 group wherein R4 is hydrogen, carbonyl or a C1 to 10 hydrocarbon group which may contain hydroxyl or carboxyl, R5 is hydrogen or a C1 to 10 hydrocarbon group which may contain hydroxyl or carboxyl, and R6 is a C1 to 10 hydrocarbon group which may contain hydroxyl or carboxyl, R2 and R3 are independently halogen or C1 to 10 hydrocarbon group; A is divalent or trivalent C1 to 8 hydrocarbon group: and n1 is 1 or 2, and n2 and n3 ar each 0-4. Said compounds serve as flame retardants during polymerization which can be conducted under normal reaction conditions.
