Vertical welding apparatus comprises a melt-retaining shoe 22 connected to an electrode guide 48 and supported by a bracket 32, and resilient means 28 interposed between the shoe 22 and the bracket 32, the shoe 22 and the guide 48 moving as a unit during welding. The wire guide 48 is adjustably mounted on a frame 42 bolted to a block 24 backing the watercooled copper shoe 22. The latter is connected by screws 54 to the frame 42. The block 24 is supported on a low friction layer 36 on the bracket 32 which is pressed towards the plates 10, 12 being welded. A resilient mass 28 is interposed between the bracket 32 and the block 24. The seam 14 has a double-U preparation with a central gap backed by a circular section bar 16 tack-welded in position. |
