PURPOSE:To prevent twisting and bending by constituting a heating section of discharge electrodes disposed in the symmetrical positions of plural pieces of optical fibers with respect to the line connecting these optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:The discharge electrode section 4 is constituted of electrode pairs 4a, 4b, exists in the positions symmetrical with the line connecting the centers of the optical fibers 1, 1 and is disposed in such position where the discharge axis connecting the electrode pairs 4a, 4b runs the center of the two optical fibers 1, 1. Further, two units of optical fiber fixing bases 5, 5 are disposed to both sides of the discharge electrode section 4 so that the optical fibers 1, 1 can be fixed. The optical fibers 1, 1 are stretched by gliding these fixing bases on stretching supports 6, 6 in the direction where the spacing between the fibers is expanded. Electricity is then discharged along the discharge line connecting the electrode pairs 4a, 4b and the optical fibers 1, 1 are heated and welded from the symmetrical positions. The fixing bases 5, 5 are moved to both sides along the supporting bases 6, 6 simultaneously therewith to stretch the two optical fibers 1, 1 by which the optical fiber coupler is obtd. The twisting and bending are thereby prevented. |
