PURPOSE:To flame retard a synthetic resin without deteriorating the physical and chemical properties of the resin, by using a polyphenylene oxide (PPO) with a specific bromine content, wherein part or all of the substituents are bromines, as an additive flame-retardant for the combustible resin. CONSTITUTION:A bromine-containing polyphenylene oxide (PPO) of formula I: (R1 and R2 are one of Cl, Br except where both of them are Br, CH2, C2H5, C3H7, C4H9 except tert-butyl, OCH3, OC2H5, CHO, CONH2, or phenyl group; m+n= 5-500; n is>=0) with a bromine content >=40wt%, is added to a combustible synthetic resin. Use of SbO3 as a flame-retardant assistant is more effective. In case n is 0 in formula I, the polymer is a tribromophenol (TBP) homopolymer. In case n is not 0, it is a copolymer of TBP. |
