Water soluble, heat-curable resins for treating paper are prepared by (a) mixing equimolar amounts of (1) a monomeric cyclic amine (I), and (2) a polyfunctional compd. (II); (b) adding the mixture to an aqueous soln., which contains an amount of water corresponding to 0.5-3 times the amount of (2), and relatively small amount, sufficient to prevent gel formation, of (3) a mono-, di-, or hydroxyalkylamine with up to 18 C atoms, or a trialkylamine with up to 22 C atoms, or a 5- to 7-membered heterocyclic compd. containing N, or a mono- or diaminobenzene, or a urea, thiourea, or guanidine compd., or ammonia; (c) holding the mixture at 5-20 deg.C for 2-5 hrs; (d) raising the temp. of the mixture to 30-50 deg.C; (e) holding the mixture at 30-50 deg.C until a clear liquid is obtained; and (f) diluting with water to 20-45% wt. dry content. where n, r, s, and t = integers; n = 1 or 2; r, s, and t = each at most 3; and (n + r + s + t) = at most 9; R1 = H, or C1-4 alkyl; and R2 = halomethyl, or alpha-hydroxy-beta-haloethyl.
|
