(A) Cmpds. (I) R and R' = H or alkyl R2 and R3 = H, alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkylaminoalkyl, dialkylaminoalkyl, aryl, or aralkyl (B) Acid addn. and quat. ammonium salts of (I). (C) Stereoisomers of (A) and (B). Antivirals, esp. for influenza. (a) 2-Bornanecarbonylchloride (6.0 g.) and dry NH3 (2 eq.) were stirred 3 hrs. at 25 deg. in CH2Cl2, washed (H2O, d. HCl, H2O, d. NaOH, and H2O), dried, evapd., and recryst. from CH2Cl2. (b) The amide (9.0 g.) in THF (150 ml.) was added to LiAlH4 (3.5 g.) in Et2O, refluxed 12 hrs., cooled, decompd. with H2O (16.6 ml.), filtered, washed, dried, treated with HCl and recryst. from MeOH-Et2O, giving 2-bornanemethylamine HCl.
