A friction wheel reduction coupling is fitted between the rotor shaft of the electric motor of an automatic washing machine, and the first belt pulley. The large wheel of the friction coupling is fixed to the first belt pulley and is supported by a rocker arm. This pivots in response to the tension exerted by the driving belt, so that the large wheel is pulled against the smaller friction wheel on the rotor shaft to effect the transmission of torque. To cehapen the costs of the motor and its running and to simplify the vibration damping suspension, its weight is reduced and the spread of the number of poles between the centrifugal and the washing operation is also reduced. The equipment takes up very little room and efficient working is ensured.
