The rotary coal cutting head with axial blades (3) carrying cutting picks and dished front plate (4) carrying further picks, has a sleeve (2) carrying the blades, with a plate (1) across its interior for mounting on a drive shaft. This can carry two or more, e.g. four equally spaced piston and cylinder units (12, 14) for connection to the drive shaft. These cylinders are connected to a distributor (30) at the forward end, which may be connected to a manually or mechanically driven pump, or alternatively which may be pump itself. The distributor and connecting lines (25, 27) are housed in a space between the intermediate plate (1) and the front plate (4).
