In a sodium-sulphur cell of the kind having a solid electrolyte tube separating cathodic reactant within the tube from sodium, an aluminium current collector rod 14 extending axially within the cathodic region is friction-welded to a mild steel or stainless steel closure plate 16 sealing the cathodic region.
