[Also in Division H5] A laminar electrical heating element 32, for use as a fabric for heated clothing, heated carpet underlays &c., comprises a non-woven, e.g. corded or felted fibrous carbon web 10 with a supporting or holding layer 11 of loosely woven textile fabric, spaced electrodes 17, a surface layer 14 of felted fabric, e.g. of wool, and a finishing layer 22, which may be, e.g. a woven fabric adhesively bonded to the layer 11 using an adhesive film 25. A foamed plastics layer 41, Fig. 11 (not shown), may provide the finishing layer, or this layer may be a knitted or a non-woven fabric layer. Layer 11 is an open weave cotton scrim, and there may be a second such layer 40, Fig. 5 (not shown), between layer 14 and web 10. The layers 11, 40 and/or 14, and the electrodes 17, which may be woven or braided metal tapes, are united to the carbon web 10 by needling (Fig. 7), but the finishing layer 22 is united by bonding or adhering. Web 10 is carbonized bulk rayon fibre. |
