[Also in Divisions C2 and G2] Homopolymers containing structural units of the formulµ and copolymers containing a unit of the above formulµ linked by sulphonyl groups are described. In the formulµ, each of A and B is hydrogen or an organic substituent, each of R and R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or alkyl or phenyl which may be substituted, X is Y is -(CH 2 ) P-1 -(O) n-1 -CH 2 - and Z completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring, h is 1 or 2, m is 2 or 3, p is 3 or 4 and M is an anion. The homopolymers are made by polymerizing N - diallylmorpholinium chloride, N - diallyl- N - dimethylammonium chloride or N - diallyl- N - di - # - hydroxy - ethyl - ammonium chloride in the presence of butyl hydroperoxide. The copolymers are made by polymerizing N- diallyl - N - cyanoethylammonium chloride, N - diallylmorpholinium chloride, N - diallyl- N - # - hydroxyethylammonium chloride, N- diallylammonium chloride, N - diallyl - N- methoxycarbonylethylammonium chloride, N- diallyl - N - acetylethylammonium chloride or N - diallyl - N - methyl - N - # - hydroxyethylammonium chloride with sulphur dioxide.
