The releasable connector comprises two interfitting halves (2, 3) each attached to the end of a respective light conductor (1). One of the connector halves (2) has at least three spring wires (4) extending longitudinally relative to the end of the light conductor (1) and spring loaded in the centre part of the connector in a radial direction relative to the light conductor axis. The other half (3) of the connector has an operating mechanism (6) for engaging the free ends of the spring wires (4) for forcing them apart or pressing them together.
