The chamber possesses >=2 inlets (3,9) for an oxidant, e.g. air. One inlet (3) contains an outlet nozzle through which hydrocarbons are injected into the chamber, and air is fed through inlet (3) for combustion of the hydrocarbons in an excess of air. The other inlet or inlets (9) are employed to supply air for the combustion of the hydrocarbons in a sub-stoichiometric amt. of air. One pref. chamber is provided on one end with an air inlet pipe contg. a pipe on its axis for the injection of hydrocarbons. The outlet end of the reaction chamber may be provided with a by-pass duct for recycling the gases leaving the reaction chamber; and the by-pass duct contains a valve admitting air, so a mixt. of recycled gas and air can be returned to the inlet end of the reaction chamber. The wall of the reaction chamber can be easily heated to a specified temp., thus improving the quality of the soot obtd.
