Used active carbon is regenerated by continuously passing it through a vertical furnace past a plurality of vertically spaced sets of electrodes which are applied with different voltages such that a higher voltage is applied across the electrodes in an upper region of the furnace so as to evaporate off the moisture contained in the carbon and to decompose organic substances deposited thereon than across the electrodes in a lower region of the furnace where the temperature of the used active carbon is raised to regenerating temperature. As the dehydration and decomposition, and the regeneration are made in the same furnace at different levels, and the temperatures at these levels can be controlled independently, regeneration is effected efficiently without any loss of the active carbon.
|
