Tantalum catalysts or catalyst precursors of the formula <IMAGE> wherein X is a halide, or alkoxide and L is an alkene (CH2=CHR) having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, react with 1-olefins to give catalysts of the formula <IMAGE> wherein R2 is hydrogen or a C1 to C18 alkyl such as methyl, ethyl, or propyl. The catalysts or catalyst precursors selectively dimerize 1-olefins to the two possible disubstituted alpha -olefin dimers, the ratio of which depends on the nature of R.
