Processes for the production of novel 2-deoxystrept-amine aminoglycosides by alkylation of an appropriate aminoglycoside or aminoglycoside derivative are disclosed. The compounds of the invention have an amino group on the l-position which is substituted with an alkyl group bearing one or more hydroxyl groups on carbon atoms other than those linked to the amino group. Such compounds are effective in treating bacterial infections and have been found to possess lower toxicity than many known aminoglycosides.
