A control system which includes an electromagnetic valve of the on-off function type for varing the total feed rate of either air or fuel to the intake system of the engine and a feedback control circuit for opening the electromagnetic valve for a variable period of time at a constant frequency based on the concentration of a specific component of the exhaust gas and is characterized in that the constant frequency is determined such that any frequency at which the intake strokes in each cylinder take place when the engine is run at any speed in a cruising speed range does not accord with and is preferably lower than the constant frequency.
