Octa:chloro-cyclopentene prodn. from cyclopentadiene - by continuous high-pressure chlorination at controlled temp. useful as intermediate for dyes, plastics and insecticides (NL 25.3.80)

Continuous prodn. of octachlorocyclopentene (I) is carried out by contacting together cyclopentadiene (II), an inert diluent and at least a stoichiometric amt. of Cl2 at a pressure of 20-300 bar. The inlet temp. of the 3 components must be =60 degrees C, and the maximum temp. in the subsequent exothermic reaction must be limited to 200-500 degrees C. The maximum reaction temp. can be controlled by using excess Cl2 as a coolant. The diluent is pref. CCl4 or (I). The amt. of Cl2 can be 110-800% (esp. 110-200%) of the stoichiometric amt.. The wt. ratio of diluent to (II) can be 60:40 to 99:1, esp. 80:20 to 99:1. The process gives high space-time yields (up to 30 kg/l. hr) with >90% selectivity for (I).
