The optical target-detection system is for an adjustable firearm equipped for rough aiming, particularly on a military vehicle. A laser rangefinder comprises an optical emitter and optoelectronic receiver. The rangefinder is an independent unit adjustably mounted on the firearm to allow small angular variations in the azimuth and elevation axes. Rough aiming of the rangefinder at the target is by mechanical coupling between unit and firearm. The rangefinder has its own observation and picture-transmission unit and its precision aiming, using the target shown on the transmission unit, is effected by the adjusting mechanism between itself and the firearm.
