Mercury removal from gas, esp. hydrogen for catalytic hydrogenation - by contact with zeolite modified with transition metal and silver

Removal of Hg from gas is effected by bringing the gas into contact with modified mol. sieve zeolites, contg., in the exchanged form, transition metal ions, (Cu, Zn, Cd, Mn and/or Ni) and also (0.01-5 wt.%) Ag. opt. in reduced form. Process is useful for purifying H2 obtd. by alkali chloride electrolysis, which has too high a Hg content (5-30 ppm.) for the hydrogenation of fats for human consumption or for hydrogenation using Hg-sensitive catalysts. Small amts. of Ag have a synergistic effect on the effectiveness of the process.
