The automatic transmission system for a road vehicle has two pumps which supply oil at low pressure for the torque converter and for the servo motors which actuate the clutches and brakes of the speed change mechanism. The oil from the second pump is delivered through a non-return valve to the delivery side of the first pump as long as the pressure from the second pump exceeds that of the first pump. In addition a pressure opening valve is fitted in a pipe which connects the delivery side of the first pump to its inlet side. The transmission is thus able to function with either only one, or with both pumps working.
