Aqueous gels containing 0.5 percent to 3 percent by weight of agarose or agar-agar, 0.001 percent to 0.05 percent by weight of a bacteriostatic agent and 0.1 percent to 30 percent by weight of a non-ionic hydroxylated compound, solid at the temperature of 40 degrees C, having a molecular weight between 100 and 1 000 daltons and a solubility in water at the temperature of 4 degrees C at least equal to 4.50 percent by weight, and free from acid or basic functional groups, characterized in that said non-ionic hydroxylated compound is sorbitol or mannitol.
