Apparatus for making an assembly, such as a cam 55, comprising means for attaching at least one element, e.g. sleeve 27 and/or stud 33 to sheet stock 10, means for aligning a parting tool 38 relative to the element(s), the parting tool operating to separate a portion of sheet stock carrying the attached elements. As shown using a multistation die, a self-punching and clinching sleeve is driven into stock 10 by a punch 21 at a first-operating station, a pilot punch 26 enters the sleeve at a second operating-station and a stud 33 located magnetically or by means of a film of grease in a hollow punch 30 is driven into the stock while a further pilot punch 29 enters the sleeve at a third operating station, idle stations being provided between the operating stations. At the fourth operating station a punch 38 separates an assembly from the stock 10, a pilot pin 39 engaging in sleeve 27 and a recess (40), Fig. 4, not shown, closely surrounding the stud. A resilient support (50) in the composite die (35), Fig. 2, not shown, returns the assembly to the stock to be ejected at the fifth station by punch 53. The web is cut up by shear 57.</p> |
