An improved adhesive composition is disclosed which contains at least one adhesive polymer, at least one non-toxic volatile solvent or liquid dispersant for the adhesive polymer and a gelling agent for the solvent or dispersant in an amount sufficient to reduce the tendency of the solution or dispersion to flow under the influence of gravity, the gelling agent being a salt of a compound of formula (I): (I) wherein R is hydrogen or a C1-18 alkyl group and R1 is a C1-18 hydrocarbon group.
