NEW MATERIAL:Hydroxyalkyl-etherified glycolipid esters of formula I [R<1> is methyl, H; when R<1> is methyl, R<2> is saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbyl of 11- 15 carbon atoms, when R<1> is H, R<2> is saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbyl of 12- 16 carbon atoms; A is -CH2CH2O-, -CH2CH(CH3)O-; R<3> is saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbyl of 1-20 carbon atoms, (A)hH; a-h are 1-100 in the total]. EXAMPLE:Methyl polyoxyethylenepolyoxypropylene(2' - O - beta - D - glucopyranosyl- D - glucopyranosyl)oxylalkanoate or alkenoate. USE:Base material for cosmetics; they hold water on skin especially in the horny layer and give good feel when applied. PREPARATION:A glycolipid of formula II or its ester is subjected to addition reaction of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide in the presence of an alkali catalyst.
