Rechargeable cells for long life applications in e.g. railway signalling or navigation have multilayer cathodes, of a layer of catalyst on the electrolyte side of a membrane of hydrophobic polymer with opt. a current collector embedded in the catalyst and rechargeable anodes spaced from those cathodes. Separated from the anode on the opposite side of it from the cathode is a third electrode used for recharging the cell. By preventing both formation of whisker crystals on the anode and cathode erosion, the cell life in terms of charging/discharging cycles is significantly lengthened. The anode is a porous body of zinc amalgam. |
