A glass tank furnace comprises sidewalls and a bottom each having an underlying refractory brick base. Metal plates are mounted on and cover the refractory brick of the sidewalls, and in succession on the brick base of the bottom are a layer of foam-type refractory heat insulative material, a granular refractory material and metal plates. The metal plates on the bottom and the sidewalls have a melting point above 1,400 DEG C.
