18,18-Difluorosteroids which are aromatic in ring A and/or B are obtained by reacting a corresponding 18-aldehyde with an aminosulphur trifluoride F3SX in which X is an amino group derived from a secondary amine, with temporary protection of the other oxo groups which are present (apart from oxo groups conjugated with double bonds and the 11-oxo group) as cyanohydrins or enol acylates, and of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups which are present as esters. Resulting products, especially of the 18,18-difluoroestradiol type, can be used as highly active sex hormones or can be used as intermediates for the synthesis of such compounds.
