The present invention relates to the preparation of non-ionic, radiopaque components, which are readily soluble in water and very well tolerated, in X-ray contrast media of the general formula I <IMAGE> in which R is hydrogen or hydroxyl and -C3H5(OH)2 is the 1,3-dihydroxyisopropyl radical or the 2,3-dihydroxypropyl radical. These compounds are obtained by reacting, in any desired sequence, a reactive functional derivative of the isophthalic acid of the general formula II <IMAGE> in which Z is an alpha -hydroxypropionylamino or alpha , beta -dihydroxypropionylamino group whose hydroxyl functions can be protected, or an amino group, and -CO-X are reactive acid or ester radicals, with an appropriate dihydroxypropylamine, and appropriately acylating where appropriate the aromatic amino group.
