Large fire-extinguishing apparatuses have a pressure-resistant extinguishing-powder storage container with a powder capacity of from 150 to 2000 kg. In order to keep the extinguishing powder in the loose state, it is provided that the storage container is kept constantly under a gas pressure of from 10 to 30 bar, the gas to be supplied to compensate for pressure losses only being introduced in the container base. Each gas re-charging operation loosens the extinguishing powder; re-charging does not occur during extinguishing operations. <IMAGE>
