A mixture of hydrogen and hydrocarbon is contacted with an isomerisation catalyst consisting of Group VI and VIII metals on an alumina carrier. The activity of the catalyst is enhanced by pretreatment with HCl and subsequent activation with thionyl chloride or sulphur monochloride. The isomerisation takes place in adiabatic reaction zones, the mixture being introduced into the first zone at 250 degrees-450 degrees F. The effluent temperature from each zone is reduced prior to entry into the next zone so that the rise in temperature across each reaction zone is controlled to provide an outlet temperature from about 25 degrees F above, to about 50 degrees F below the outlet temperature of the first zone. The residence time in the first zone is equal to or less than that in subsequent zones. This process uses the catalyst more efficiently.
|
