Aqs., olefin-free ionic emulsions useful as floor polishes are made by emulsifying (i) 10-15% of an acid copolymer of 99-50% ethylene and 1-50% crotonic acid in the pres. of (ii) 2-5% of a basic substance, by the usual wax-in-water or water-in-wax processes. The copolymers (i) are made as described in BE 691798, by polymerising the components in org solvent soln. at 50-250 degress. C and 200-950 atm. using a free rad. catalyst. The bases (ii) are suitably diethylamine, morpholine, 3-methoxypropylamine, diethylaminoethanol, 2-amino-2-methyl propanol, triethanolamine or conc. aqs. 40-50% alkali lves (eg KOH). Other emulsions such as styrene/acrylate may be present in the composition as well as wetting agents, etc. Self-polishing floor polishes drying to hard, glossy, water-resistant films.
|
