<p>1313723 Lamps T WADDELL 19 April 1971 [27 Jan 1970] 20932/71 Heading F4R A lighting device comprises two exposed contacts adapted to be supplied with low-voltage electricity and at least one lamp bulb having a pair of terminals, at least one of the terminals being elongated so that the bulb can be laid, suspended or otherwise supported between the contacts when in use but can be readily displaced from its operative position when desired. In one embodiment the device comprises a base 15 enclosing a transformer or battery and a transparent or translucent container 16 provided with a contact plate 18 at the bottom and a contact rim 20 around the top. Tubular incandescent lamps 1 having elongated terminal wires 3 extending axially from both ends are placed in the container and rest with their terminals in engagement with the contacts, the intensity of illumination being controlled by adding or removing lamps as desired. In alternative embodiments the contacts are constituted by metal bars bent to appropriate shapes, metal or metallized plates having notches to receive the terminal wires, or wire netting, and the base or some other part of the device may have, or constitute, a receptacle for spare lamps. In a further embodiment each lamp has one terminal wire bent into a loop and is suspended from one of the contact bars so that the second terminal wire hangs freely. The second contact bar is so arranged that the second terminal wire of any lamp may be brought into engagement therewith by tilting the lamp through a limited angle about its loop. This tilting may be produced by selective displacement of individual lamps, by tilting the whole device or, in an Aeolian device, by air currents.</p> |
