The controller has an electronic switch and an inductor in the series arm, a free running diode in the shunt arm, a capacitor at the output and a control circuit operating the switch. A second capacitor (17) is inserted between the free running diode (16) and reference potential (3). A series circuit consisting of a second diode (25) and a second electronic switch (26) is in parallel with the diode (16) and capacitor (17). A second control circuit (22) blocks the switch (26) when voltage (-U2) across the capacitor (17) falls below a specified value. The switch (26) is made conducting when the capacitor (17) voltage rises above the specified value.
