The coil has a protective metal sheathing, a connecting tube and a protective tube on it for the coil connections, on which an insulating tape is wound. To produce a tapering insulating layer on the protective tube, the tape width is reduced by a cutter movable along the tube. The tube other end is brought to the connecting piece, and the protective tube insulating layer is connected to an insulating strip on the coil protective sheathing. The width of the insulating tape (4) is reduced at its other end also by a movable cutter, so that an insulating layer tapering at both ends is produced. Space between the insulating strip (5) and the tube (3) insulating layer is filled by a further insulating tape (7).
