The selection mechanism actuates linkages to modify needle shaft overstitch width and/or the direction of fabric advance, and the cams and the selector are mounted in carriers in the base on the sewing machine. There are passages for the operating components of the selector. The cams and the selector are mounted to a common carrier. The passages for the press button control components are located at the upper side of the enlarged section of the base of the sewing machine.
