The two-stroke combustion engine has a cylinder with inlet ports (11) which are opened by the piston when it is near BDC to admit air which flows upwards following a rotating path. The exhaust port in the cylinder head is controlled by a valve (3, 4). Opening and closure of the valve are timed such that the expansion stroke from TDC to valve opening is the compression stroke from valve closure to TDC. The compressor (12) provided outside the cylinder block to compress the inlet air, may be driven from the crankshaft. (9).
