The flat structure consists of a knitted or warp-knitted fabric or contains such a fabric containing stitch courses of electrically non-conductive cotton yarn. It further contains stitch courses which contain metal fibres of 30 to 60 mm in length spun in the cotton yarn and are arranged at least in pairs with a mutual distance of 1 to 5 mm from stitch base to stitch base. The distance between two adjacent stitches of the same metal-fibre-containing stitch course is 0.3 to 3.5 mm. The groups of two or more metal-fibre-containing stitch courses are arranged at a distance of from 5 to 40 mm, measured from stitch base to stitch base of the respective first stitch course, and are separated from one another by stitch courses of electrically non-conductive cotton yarn. The flat structure serves for influencing the effect of electromagnetic radiation on living organisms. It can be in the form of a mat-shaped cover, for example as car seat mat.
